At least until we inherit a bigass fortune or\u00a0win the Lottery.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m talking about Cobos Malbec, the icon wine from Paul Hobbs&#8217; legendary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vinacobos.com\">Vina Cobos<\/a> in Mendoza&#8217;s\u00a0Luj\u00e1n de Cuyo region. Hobbs has consulted with numerous wineries in Argentina, but this is the vineyard he <em>owns, <\/em>so obviously it&#8217;s the one he&#8217;s put his most masterful touch on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/vina_cobos.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-260\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/vina_cobos.jpg\" alt=\"vina_cobos\" width=\"600\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/vina_cobos.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/vina_cobos-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/vina_cobos-500x361.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I flew to Mendoza and visited the winery myself. But after 5000 miles and thousands of miles in of travel,\u00a0would they give me just a wee taste?\u00a0Nope. Not unless you bought the stuff. And at the time that just seemed highway robbery.<\/p>\n<p>Should a malbec cost $200? Hell no. But this one does.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-259\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/vinacobosline.jpg\" alt=\"vinacobosline\" width=\"400\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/vinacobosline.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/vinacobosline-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This seems a good moment to back up and describe the entire line of Vina Cobos&#8217; wines. All of these are available in a Malbec and Cabernet version, but as usual I am focusing on the Malbec.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Felino<\/strong> is readily available in the States for about $19. It aspires to take the sweet spot from Catena Malbec in this category. It&#8217;s not a bad wine, but with some shopping around I think you can do better for the price.\u00a0<img class=\"usr\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/universal-star-rating\/includes\/image.php?img=01.png&amp;px=12&amp;max=5&amp;rat=3\" alt=\"3 out of 5 stars\" style=\"height: 12px !important;\" \/> (3 \/ 5)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bramare<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0where Hobbs starts to get serious about wine. This bottle can be found around $43, again coincidentally about the same price as Catena Alta.\u00a0<img class=\"usr\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/universal-star-rating\/includes\/image.php?img=01.png&amp;px=12&amp;max=5&amp;rat=3.5\" alt=\"3.5 out of 5 stars\" style=\"height: 12px !important;\" \/> (3.5 \/ 5)<\/p>\n<p>But for my money, where Vina Cobos starts to become a must-try is at the next level up: the <strong>green-label Bramares.\u00a0<\/strong>These are the wines from specific vineyards. The one from the <strong>Marchiori Vineyard,<\/strong> about $75 if you shop carefully, is one of the best wines I have ever tasted.\u00a0<img class=\"usr\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/universal-star-rating\/includes\/image.php?img=01.png&amp;px=12&amp;max=5&amp;rat=4.5\" alt=\"4.5 out of 5 stars\" style=\"height: 12px !important;\" \/> (4.5 \/ 5)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-94\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Palacio-Duhau-Park-Hyatt-Buenos-Aires-141-Facade-Garden-1280x4271.jpg\" alt=\"BUEPH_141\" width=\"1280\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Palacio-Duhau-Park-Hyatt-Buenos-Aires-141-Facade-Garden-1280x4271.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Palacio-Duhau-Park-Hyatt-Buenos-Aires-141-Facade-Garden-1280x4271-300x100.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Palacio-Duhau-Park-Hyatt-Buenos-Aires-141-Facade-Garden-1280x4271-1024x342.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Palacio-Duhau-Park-Hyatt-Buenos-Aires-141-Facade-Garden-1280x4271-500x167.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But my friend Greg and I were\u00a0sitting in the stunning courtyard of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buenosaires.park.hyatt.com\/en\/hotel\/home.html\">Palacio Duhau <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.buenosaires.park.hyatt.com\/en\/hotel\/home.html\">&#8211;\u00a0Park Hyatt<\/a>,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>arguably one of the nicest places to have a drink in the world. And Cobos Malbec was on the wine list.\u00a0I&#8217;d just gotten a mess of pesos at 11\/1 exchange via <a title=\"Join Xoom\" href=\"http:\/\/refer.xoom.com\/v2\/share\/6100511556865177271\" target=\"_blank\">Xoom.com<\/a>. So everything was a bargain, right? It\u00a0not now, when?<\/p>\n<p>So when they served the bottle, it was&#8230; good. Actually the bottle was a little warm, and I asked them to\u00a0cool it off. And our first sip was just, nice. But after five minutes, oxygen worked its magic and we started to realize we had one delicious glass of wine in our hands.<\/p>\n<p>It grew in complexity and the legs on the sides of the glass were just huge.<\/p>\n<p>It was truly\u00a0amazing, but for the price, you could have three bottles of equally amazing wine. So was it worth it? That depends on where you are, and what you are celebrating.<\/p>\n<p>For all the talk of trophy wines that are too big, too New World, and too alcohol-tinged, there is something to be said for a wine that just blows you away on a perfect afternoon in one of the world&#8217;s most perfect places. <strong>Cobos Malbec<\/strong> <img class=\"usr\" src=\"https:\/\/www.drinkingargentina.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/universal-star-rating\/includes\/image.php?img=01.png&amp;px=12&amp;max=5&amp;rat=4.5\" alt=\"4.5 out of 5 stars\" style=\"height: 12px !important;\" \/> (4.5 \/ 5)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cobos Malbec \u00a0\u00a0 It&#8217;s the wine most of us never get to drink.
